bBasic Information on Food and Housing in Thailand
Below are some simple guidelines on how to get to the island and what to expect when you arrive. Whatever happens, don't worry, Thailand is a very easy place to travel and to be. Basic Info on Home and Food
There will be plenty of yoga during the workshop, but we should manage to squeeze in lovely days on the beach and nights eating Thai food. Thus you may need to know a little about the place.
We are situated on Haad Yuan, Ko Phangan, Thailand. It is a stunning island on the south-east side of Phangan Island, Gulf of Thailand side (South East Thailand). There are three bays which are accessible, all of which have bungalows and restaurants.
Accomodation
You have a wide variety of choices for where to stay. You can live quite cheaply in lower-end bungalows without undue discomfort. Those would run you about 200 Bhat (6 dollars, 4 €). Medium end is around $12-$20 per night (9€-15€). You can pay more and get better living conditions, mainly at The Sanctuary; there is a high end resort on Haad Yuan. I have no info on this one. Could run as much as $300.
Reservations are difficult to make, so it is best to come a few days early and find a place you like. There are nearly always places to stay. I am not really in the business of finding accommodation for people, but i may try to find someone who can help us on that part. It is just a question of spending a day going around and looking at a few places. We all do it!
Food
Food is cheap, plentiful and very very good. There are many places you can choose from, and all restaurants make vegetarian food. Fruit and veg heaven! It is easy to eat well and cheaply on the bays. Bamboo Hut is particularly good as is the Sanctuary. One of Thailand's great attractions is the quality and diversity of the food. Western style food is also easy to get and not everything has to be spicy. The is plenty of seafood as well, fish and other undersea creatures.
Getting There
You can fly from Bangkok to Ko Samui and get a boat over to the island called Ko Phangan. You will need to arrive at the beaches on the south east side of the island. There are three main beaches and you can stay at any of them to do the training: Haad Yuan (where the training is), Haad Tien (Sanctuary) or Haad Wai Nam. They all have accomodation, food and of course, beaches.
If you like it slower and cheaper, you can take the train or bus to the island (including ferry) it is called a 'joint ticket' at the travel agents.. Once again, make your way to Haad Rin from the port (Thong Sala). Get the boat or ask for a taxi to Haad Tien or Haad Yuan from Haad Rin. In good weather, the water taxis leave from sunrise side Haad Rin beach (starting about February). Otherwise, they leave from Haad Rin Port side (sunset side).
