This is a commonly asked question and a difficult one. From my experience, there are not so many great places to go and study. There are many, many mediocre ones and one can have some kicks trying different things. However, for the serious student, there are not so many choices if you are not involved in a specific 'style'. However, i can reccommend some places where the yoga is quite good.

For yoga in South India and for those interested in Yoga Therapy, you can check out Desikachar's site, the son of yoga granddaddy, Krishnamacharya. Much of what i do in Jungleyoga is based on his work. The yoga is very good technically, but can be a bit dry at times....

or you can try an old student of his, A.G. Mohan, also in South India

For yoga in North India, i reccommend going to the Rishikesh/ Haridwar area, where there are numerous yoga schools and ashrams. This is my personal stomping grounds, the home of my guru and my favorite place in India. Right on the Ganga river, it is a beautful place, the best of India if you ask me. You can look around and try various things, but i can suggest a few. One i suggest you stay away from is Trika Yoga/ Agama Yoga. I have had personal bad experiences with this school, but people have different experiences of course. They tend to be cult-y and some people go there because they offer sexual tantra. Watch out for this.

Anyhow, i can tell you that a very pure and wonderful place is the Santosh Puri Ashram in Haridwar. It is run by Mataji, as German woman sadhu, mother and yogi. She is a shining light, as are her children who also teach at the ashram. My friend did the program there and loved it immensely. If you want a sweet, and genuine experience without B.S., go here.

A more traditional school is located in Munger, Bihar, North India. It is certainly very authentic but is reported to be also fairly hard-core. It is certainly in a difficult and intense part of India. Bihar is the poorest state in the country. But Bihar School is the source of some of the best yoga books in print. You will learn first-hand what the books teach on paper. If you really want a full-0n yoga experience, try this place....
